Minimise the risk of condensation - a key benefit of Structural Thermal Breaks.

A key benefit of utilising Structural Thermal Breaks is as a control against the risk of condensation developing, particularly within hard to access areas such as a facade build-up. Without a thermal break, the interior surface of a connection is likely to be at a much lower temperature than the surrounding internal air, inducing condensation on the internal side of the connection. If you’ve got materials like timber, gib or insulation attached to this area, they will get wet and, over a period of time, may result in mould developing or structural damage to timber elements.

These are both obviously significant problems which building owners, occupants, designers and builders all want to avoid.

This isn’t a new problem at all (see 2005 BRANZ article https://www.buildmagazine.org.nz/assets/PDF/B87-22-Condensation-and-thermal-bridges.pdf) but it is a problem which has generally remained in the too hard basket. If you’ve got a project you’d like assistance with, reach out and we can point you in the right direction.
